Similarities

If you follow the road until the end… It will lead you nowhere…
Sometimes you need to dare to step off the path, try to explore alternatives routes to reach your destination. It is not because “we have always done in it this way”, that there may be no alternative.
Look around, see what others and try to find similarities. Nature is self-similar, and science has recognized this too, we only fail to see the self-similarities in many cases in business. Only if you manage to see the issue from an holistic approach and manage to break it down to its most elementary mechanisms, the similarities occur.
My problem, within my context; seems so much different from yours in your context. But when we step away from it, look at it from a distance and start breaking it down into simple and natural building blocks it may occur we’re exactly facing the same problem.
What we need to dare is to step-out of our normal thinking path and explore other similar problems and see how they got solved. Think out of your box…
An examples, in essence utilities companies all face the same problem and challenges. In essence use a network to bring a service to a customer. This applies to water, gas, electricity and telecommunications. They all have the need to fulfill, assure and bill the needs of the customer.
A few years ago we faced a challenge in the telecommunications industry, talking to a colleague who worked for a gas company he thought my question was trivial and explained how they had solved it. By breaking down the problem and looking for similarities we managed to resolve a telco problem building upon the experience from another industry.
I am constantly on the look-out to for similarities and enjoy discovering them…they show me alternative paths to wander.
